Royal Dresden Art at the Court in the 18th Century 17 November 1990 – 3 March 1991 Exhibition The exhibition displayed 274 works of art (paintings, sculptures, silver, porcelain, jewels and valuables), most of which were commissioned by the court in Dresden or Saxony during the 18th century. The young Elector August der Starke had himself crowned King of Poland in 1697, and in the following decades he developed the heavily fortified capital city inherited from his ancestors into a modern royal residence. He was the greatest patron of the arts in German cultural history. A total of nine Dresden museums and the Saxon State Library contributed to the exhibition with their loans. The accent was on the world-famous “Green Vault” treasury. The exhibition provided a comprehensive picture of the Augustan Baroque in Dresden, one of the great periods of German art par excellence.
