Double guided Tour with the Bayerische Staatsoper

Tickets: €28

Meeting point: Bayerische Staatsoper, north entrance hall behind the National Theater

Wigs are fascinating – in real life as well as on stage. To this day, they remain an integral part of the opera world. Many of them are painstakingly handcrafted – specially made for their grand entrance in the spotlight.

Our double guided tour opens the doors to the mask workshops of the Bayerische Staatsoper and offers rare insights behind the scenes. Afterwards (from 5:30 p.m.), the tour continues through the exhibition HAIR—Stories of Power and Passion at the Kunsthalle München, where hair is visible as an expression of identity, self-presentation, and social role in art and culture.

The double guided tour is a collaborative event organized by the Bayerische Staatsoper and Kunsthalle München. It begins at the Bayerische Staatsoper.

Lecture in German: Blond wie das Licht. Eine Kulturgeschichte blonden Haars von Helena bis Marilyn

Lecture by Prof. Dr. Ralf Junkerjürgen (Universität Regensburg)

Blonde hair stands for purity, seduction—and a persistent cliché. This lecture traces the cultural history of blonde hair from antiquity to Hollywood and shows how an ideal became the stereotype of the “dumb blonde”—between myth, mass media, and pop culture. An entertaining and insightful journey through projections, role models, and prejudices that continue to have an impact today.

Ralf Junkerjürgen is a professor of Romance languages at the University of Regensburg. His research focuses on popular culture, narratology, reception aesthetics, and film.

Lecture in German: Wenn Stress sichtbar wird. Was Haar und Haarwurzel über unsere Psyche verraten

Lecure by Prof. Dr. med. Eva M. J. Peters (Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen).

Hair is much more than just a surface feature—it is a sensitive indicator of health. In a highly active mini-organ, each individual hair grows in alternating phases of growth and rest. It is connected to the brain via nerve fibers, and stress directly influences its growth. At the same time, it stores stress hormones, thus preserving traces of past stress. The lecture shows how closely hair, the nervous system, and health are connected.

Prof. Eva Peters heads the Psychoneuroimmunology Laboratory at the Clinic for Psychosomatics at Justus Liebig University in Giessen and also works at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin. She is a dual specialist in dermatology and psychosomatics, a certified psycho-oncologist, and a neurodermatitis and urticaria trainer. She also works as a depth psychologist and systemic psychotherapist.

Marie Antoinette

In Cooperation with Theatiner Filmkunst cinema, Theatinerstrasse 32

Director: Sofia Coppola

with Kirsten Dunst, Marianne Faithfull

USA 2006, 123 Min.

English with German subtitles

From teenager to it girl: Sofia Coppola uses opulent images to tell the story of a young woman whose body, clothing, and hairstyles become political symbols. Married as a teenager to the court of Versailles, Marie Antoinette is completely reimagined—her appearance serves as a representation and exercise of power. Between magnificent wigs, court etiquette, and private longing, the film makes the emptiness behind the pose palpable—while at the same time celebrating female visibility as an act of self-assertion.

Lecture in German: Haar als Bühne. Wie Social Media und KI Rollenbilder formen

Lecture by Dr. Alina Gales (Technische Universität München)

Hair is an expression of identity, power, and belonging—even in the digital space. But who decides which images of the body and gender are visible? Social media and AI systems shape our perception more than we realize. This lecture highlights how algorithmic processes reinforce, distort, or normalize stereotypical role models—and how these digital power structures can be identified and critically questioned.

Alina Gales holds a doctorate in cultural studies. She heads the Diversity & Inclusion department at the Technical University of Munich and is a speaker on the social impact of artificial intelligence.

Location: Gartensalon of the Kunsthalle
