Kai from Taiwan lands with a broken heart to take a vacation. A coincidence leads her to Fu Ang’s umbrella store. He could become a friend, but the rainy season fails to materialize and his store disappears. While searching for Fu Ang, Kai discovers the story of Xiaoxin and a group of Chinese workers in a posh skyscraper. Kai finds himself strangely mirrored in Xiaoxin’s story. Main characters come and go unexpectedly in this quiet comedy of misunderstandings. From one city to the next, they follow the necessities of work rather than a classical dramaturgy. Lecture in German: Baumzeit. Geschichte und Zukunft pflanzenfreundlicher Städte

Lecture at the TU Munich by Prof. Dr. Sonja Dümpelmann Prof. Dr. Sonja Dümpelmann (LMU Rachel Carson Center
for Environment and Society
).

The principle of sustainability originates from the practice of forestry in past centuries. Paradoxically, its application has often led to forest monocultures that are considered unsustainable both ecologically and socially. However, forward-looking planning and future thinking can also open up opportunities for a socially just and ecologically, culturally and economically sustainable environment. What can we learn from the past for the future treatment of trees and urban nature?

With: Léa Seydoux, Georges MacKay
FR/CA 2023 – 146 min. – french/english O.m.U.

At and in cooperation with the Theatiner Filmkunst cinema, Theatinerstrasse 32.

In the year 2044, emotions no longer have a place. Feelings have become obstacles that hinder productivity. Gabrielle cannot free herself from her fears and is forced to let artificial intelligence “cleanse” her of them. This process sends her on a journey through her past lives. Around 1900, Gabrielle is a pianist in Paris, in the 2010s a model in Los Angeles, always meeting Louis, who seems to be connected to her. Their encounter tells of great feelings and the difficulty of living them. LA BÊTE with Léa Seydoux is a spectacular adaptation of the short story “The Beast in the Jungle” by Henry James, reminiscent of David Lynch.

Lecture in German: Wir vs. die Anderen: Was uns zusammenhält und wie wir Spaltung überwinden

Lecture at the TU Munich by Dr. Judith Kohlenberger (WU, Vienna University of Economics and Business).

The increase in social diversity is not without its tensions. Conflicts between new arrivals and those who have been here for a while seem to be increasing and fronts are hardening. But demarcation between us and “the others” does not have to lead to exclusion if belonging is developed as a counter-concept. The lecture explores the question of how we can shape coexistence, protect basic rights and promote self-effective engagement.

Location: Technical University of Munich, Friedrich von Thiersch Hörsaal, Access Gabelsbergerstraße

Price: free of charge

Koyaanisqatsi

Director: Godfrey Reggio

US 1982 – 86 min.

At and in cooperation with the Theatiner Filmkunst cinema, Theatinerstrasse 32.

This visually stunning classic opened up a completely new viewing and listening experience in 1982. With spectacular tracking shots and nature footage, this documentary shows the beauty of nature and its destruction by civilization and can also be regarded as the first film about the Anthropocene. Named after the Hopi word for “life out of balance, crazy life”, the film has achieved cult status with its atmospheric music by Philipp Glass.
