About us About the Kunsthalle With around 350,000 visitors every year, the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung (in short: Kunsthalle Munich) is one of Germany’s most prestigious exhibition houses. Located at the heart of Munich, the Kunsthalle stages three large exhibitions a year on a variety of themes: from painting, sculpture, graphic art, photography and crafts, through to design and fashion. The Kunsthalle Munich’s diverse programme alternates monographic exhibitions with thematic projects, yet also includes interdisciplinary concepts. The Kunsthalle Munich is supported by the Hypo-Kulturstiftung, which was founded in 1983 by the former Hypotheken- und Wechselbank to mark the 150th anniversary of the company. Two years later, on 14 June 1985, the Kunsthalle opened its doors for the general public. The HypoVereinsbank (now part of UniCredit Bank) continues its strong commitment to the Foundation and the Kunsthalle to this day. In 2001, the Kunsthalle moved into its current premises in the “Fünf Höfe” complex, designed and built by the renowned Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. With an area of approximately 1,200 m² equipped with state-of-the-art museum technology, the exhibition space provides a worthy stage for all forms of art. Peter Ade, the first director of the Kunsthalle, was succeeded by Dr. Johann Georg Prince von Hohenzollern in 1999, who headed the exhibition venue with great success until March 2006. Dr. Christiane Lange then took over leadership of the Kunsthalle until the end of 2012; since January 2013, Dr. Roger Diederen continues to develop the discerning exhibition programme as its director. More Less Hypo-Kulturstiftung Hypo-Kulturstiftung is a non-profit foundation of HypoVereinsbank/UniCredit Bank Munich. The foundation was established in 1983. According to its charter, its main purpose is “the non-material and material promotion of cultural projects and institutions in the fields of art, the care and preservation of cultural values and the preservation of historical monuments”. Art and building culture The two main areas of support are the visual arts and building culture. The Kunsthalle München is one of the most renowned exhibition halls in Germany and was opened in 1985. The variety of projects ranges from archaeology to old masters and contemporary art. The support programme in the field of fine arts includes a museum fund, grants and a scholarship. In addition, the Hypo Cultural Foundation is also committed to building culture and the preservation of historical monuments. More than 200 private owners have already been able to enjoy the Monument Award. And as a founding member, the foundation has been supporting the “Kulturerbe Bayern” initiative since 2015 – and thus the preservation of historical architectural monuments.
