Pablo Picasso and his collection 30 April – 16 August 1998 For the first time, Pablo Picasso’s personal collection left France and was shown in its entirety at the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung from April 30 to August 16, 1998. The collection included important works by Balthus, Braque, Cézanne, Corot, Courbet, Degas, Derain, Matisse, Miró, Renoir and Rousseau, etc. After Picasso’s death in 1973, the personal collection was donated to the French state. Since 1985 it is in the Picasso Museum in Paris. “Picassos by Picasso” As a supplement to this collection, Picasso’s own works, the “Picassos by Picasso,” are still on display. Paintings, drawings and sculptures were selected for this exhibition, in which it becomes visible that the works of his collection are in dialogue with his own creations. In addition to the Picasso Museum in Paris, the following international museums have supported this exhibition with loans: Picasso Museum, Barcelona; National Gallery, Berlin; Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Musée national d’art moderne (Centre Georges Pompidou), Paris; Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris; State Hermitage, Saint Petersburg; Washington University Art Gallery, St. Louis; Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice; Musée d’Art Moderne, Villeneuve d’Ascq. In addition, there were generous loans from private collections. Approximately 170 works were shown, 60 of which were by Pablo Picasso. The scientific conception as well as the editing of the catalog were in the hands of Hélène Seckel, chief conservator at the Musée Picasso in Paris.
