The quiet expressionist

An index of paintings and works on paper by Otto Mueller (1874–1930) has been in preparation at the Folkwang Museum in Essen since 1992. In 2003, this fundamental research work was nearing completion. The Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung had taken this opportunity to plan a large exhibition of this quiet expressionist.

The up-to-date state of research

A memorial exhibition in 1931 in Breslau and a presentation in Hanover in 1956 paid tribute to Otto Mueller, apart from that, he had not received the appreciation he deserves. In view of this, it was high time to present Mueller’s work, with approximately 65 paintings, 45 drawings and 50 handcoloured lithographs.
The exhibition was complemented with works by his artistic forebears, such as Böcklin, Marées, Lehmbruck or Stuck, who influenced his early work, as well as with samples by his ‘Brücke’ friends Kirchner and Heckel. In this way, the most up-to-date state of research could been shown with the aid of original works.
