Matta 20 September – 11 November 1991 This exhibition was dedicated to the Chilean Roberto Sebastián Antonio Matta Echaurren (1911–2002) – Matta for short. The name Matta is inextricably linked with Surrealism. After studying architecture in Santiago, he first joined Le Corbusier’s office in Paris, but soon renounced all constructivist tendencies and joined André Breton’s circle. When the Surrealist movement threatened to freeze at the end of the 1930s, it was two young Latin Americans, the Chilean Matta and the Cuban Lam, who once again gave new impetus to the group in Paris. More than eighty works by the artist (50 oil paintings, 1 sculpture and 34 drawings) from all his creative periods were shown in a comprehensive survey. The loans came from public and private collections in France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and the USA, and the exhibition was subsequently shown at KunstHaus Wien.
