Fernando Botero Paintings, Drawings, Sculptures 4 Juli – 7 September 1986 Exhibition The exhibition of 90 works from 1959 to 1986 presented a cross-section of the paintings, drawings, watercolors and sculptures of Fernando Botero (*1932, Medellín, Colombia). The loans came from museums and private collections in the United States, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, as well as from the artist’s own collection. In a consistent departure from abstract tendencies of his time, Botero devoted himself to the depiction of figurative scenes and still lifes. A striking feature of the people populating his paintings is their increased body volume – for which artists such as Rubens, Léger, Picasso, or the muralists of Mexico come into question as models, as do pre-Columbian ceramics.
