Fernando Botero Paintings, Drawings, Sculptures 4 Juli – 7 September 1986 Exhibition The exhibition of 90 works from the period 1959 to 1986 showed a cross-section of paintings, drawings, watercolors, and sculptures by the Colombian-born artist Fernando Botero (1932–2023). The loans came from museums and private collections in the USA, Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as from the artist’s own collection. In a consequent departure from the abstract tendencies of his time, Botero devoted himself to the depiction of figurative scenes and still lifes. A striking feature of the figures populating his paintings is their increased body volume – for which artists such as Rubens, Léger, Picasso or the Mexican muralists are just as likely to be models as pre-Columbian ceramics.
