Fabergé / Cartier Rivals at the Tsar's Court 28 November 2003 – 12 April 2004 Exhibition This extraordinary exhibition juxtaposed two imperial Russian court jewelers and covered the period between 1900 and 1917, the height of Fabergé’s art and the rapidly growing fame of the House of Cartier. Of the total of 1000 exhibits, 800 works were created by these two jewelers. The objects were provided by 60 lenders from 15 countries, such as Russia, the United States and various European countries, as well as numerous German and European royalty and noble families. Sparkling imperial Easter eggs from the Kremlin, over 100 items on loan from the Hermitage, numerous works of art privately owned by the tsars from Pavlovsk Palace and paintings from the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg were among the masterpieces never before shown in Germany. The two last imperial Easter eggs, which the imprisoned Tsar Nicholas II was no longer allowed to give to his mother and wife in March 1917, were presented here as a world premiere.
