Claude Monet and modern art 23 November 2001 – 10 March 2002 For the first time in Munich, an exhibition was dedicated to the great Impressionist Claude Monet (1840–1926). It presented the impact of Monet’s late work, especially his Waterlilies pictures, on 20th-century art. In dialog with Monet, works by Sam Francis, Ellsworth Kelly, Willem de Kooning, Joan Mitchell, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still, among others, were on display. The exhibition was created in collaboration with the Fondation Beyeler, Basel, where it was also presented. The loans came from public and private collections in Europe and the USA.
