Auguste Rodin The Kiss – The Couples 22 September 2006 – 7 January 2007 Auguste Rodin’s (1840–1917) iconic work The Kiss received a new reading in this exhibition: instead of being understood merely as a symbol of physical, sensual love, a new set of questions was addressed to the sculpture, allowing for far more complex interpretations. In juxtaposition with other depictions of couples, a broad spectrum of new perspectives emerged. In addition to 38 sculptures in marble, stone, and bronze from all phases of Rodin’s career, drawings and photographs were also on display. Most of the loans came from the Musée Rodin in Paris, supplemented by works from public and private European collections.
