Ancient China 2 December 1995 – 3 March 1996 Until then, this exhibition was the most important presentation of Chinese art and culture ever shown outside the People’s Republic of China. The exhibition, organized in close cooperation with the China Cultural Relics Promotion Center in Beijing, presented around 200 objects from recent excavations, all from Chinese museums and collections. They provided a comprehensive picture of the prehistory and early history of the Middle Kingdom and the emergence of its civilization between 5000 BC and 220 AD. After Munich, the exhibition was shown at the Kunsthaus Zürich, the British Museum and the Louisiana Museum. This exhibition was at the time one of the most comprehensive presentations of Chinese art and culture ever shown outside the People’s Republic of China. Organized in close cooperation with the China Cultural Relics Promotion Center in Beijing, it featured some 200 objects from new excavation finds, all from Chinese museums and collections. They offered a comprehensive picture of the prehistory and early history of the Middle Kingdom and the emergence of its civilization. The exhibition was shown in five venues in Europe: the Kulturstiftung Ruhr Essen, the Kunsthalle München, the Kunsthaus Zürich, the British Museum in London and the Louisiana Museum in Humlebaek.
