America – Europe The Sonnabend Collection 5 July – 8 September 1996 This exhibition of 79 paintings and sculptures from the collection of Ileana (née Schapira, 1914–2007) and Michael Sonnabend (1900–2001) presented some of the most important artist:s of American and European art after 1950. The collection was created in parallel with the couple’s influential gallery practice in Paris, Geneva, and in New York. Works by Americans such as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Roy Lichtenstein were in dialogue with European artists such as Mario Merz, Anselm Kiefer, Jannis Kounellis, and many more. In order to be able to adequately show the great diversity of the collection, the exhibition was shown together in the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung and the Staatsgalerie moderner Kunst (then in the Haus der Kunst).
