Jean Tinguely 27 September 1985 – 6 January 1986 With Jean Tinguely (1925–1991) , the Kunsthalle presented one of the most important representatives of a modernist artistic development that aimed to expand the traditional concept of art. Tinguely challenged traditional genres of painting and sculpture by experimenting with moving objects and unusual materials. His machine sculptures, driven by motors, produce dissonant noise, while squeaking, rattling, rattling, whistling, groaning… They are made of junk, sheet metal and discarded machine parts, remnants of our modern industrial society. Playfully they ironize any exaggerate perfectionism and the consumerism of our affluent society. The exhibition showed mainly new works by the artist, specially conceived for this venue, supplemented by some older works and numerous drawings.
