Jean Tinguely 27 September 1985 – 6 January 1986 With Jean Tinguely (1925–1991), the Kunsthalle presented one of the most important protagonists of the artistic development of Modernism, whose aim was to expand the traditional concept of art. He experimented with moving objects and materials that had previously been alien to art. The kinetic sculptures, which Tinguely called ‘machines’, are constructed from scrap and old materials and are characterized by their movements and noise. He thus challenged traditional notions of sculpture. Tinguely’s machines were also an expression of his criticism of industrial processes and the production of superfluous things. The exhibition showed predominantly new works by the artist, which were specially conceived for this occasion and for the spatial situation of the Kunsthalle, complemented with some older objects and numerous drawings.
