Cleopatra Egypt around the Turn of Times 16 June – 10 September 1989 The exhibition was organized by the Brooklyn Museum, with its world-famous collection of Egyptian art. After Brooklyn and Detroit, Munich was the only European place where the total of 140 works of art from forty museums and collections from America and Europe were shown. In the exhibition, Caesar and Cleopatra met again after two millennia, and the contrasts between Orient and Occident became unabashedly visible in the powerful, time-honored statues of the pharaohs and the graceful marble portraits of the ladies of the Alexandrian court. The luxury of the time was also evidenced by precious gold jewelry and ornate glassware, dainty Tanagra figurines and fragile clay vessels.
